Ravel out with injury
Todd Pletcher’s imposing string of Derby prospects was dealt a major blow when Ravel was sidelined with an injured left front leg. The injury has taken the supremely talented son of Fusaichi Pegasus off the Debry trail and out of training for approximately three months, Pletcher confirmed Tuesday night.
Ravel - who closed at 11-1 in each of the first two Derby Future Wager pools - raced twice as a juvenile, breaking his maiden in early December at Hollywood Park. His lone start thus far this season was an impressive victory in the Sham Stakes over the Doug O’Neill trained Liquidity.
With Ravel’s defection, owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith are now contemplating running their female sensation, Rags to Riches, in the Santa Anita Derby on April 7, which was to be Ravel’s final pre-Derby prep.
Those considered definite for the Santa Anita Derby include Liquidity, Tiago and Boutrous. Song of Navarone came out of the WinStar Derby with a minor foot injury, but is expected to be ready in time, and the Pletcher trained King of the Roxy was originally pointed to this spot along with Ravel, but Pletcher may now reshuffle his entire deck.
