Champ returns in Tampa Bay Derby

Street Sense arrived at Churchill Downs last November with a modest resume that included a pair of third-place finishes in a pair of Grade III events, and was reasonably sent off at odds of 15-1 in the Breeders’ Cup.

Beneath Calvin Borel, Street Sense got the dream run along a golden rail, and powered home to win the Juvenile by 10 lengths and an Eclipse Award to boot. (more…)

Baffert looks to join Derby party

Trainer Bob Baffert has been absent from the Triple Crown for the last several years, but seems primed to join fray with Air Commander, a son of the brilliant Point Given whom Baffert trained to win two-thirds of the Triple Crown in 2001. Air Commander stands the 8-5 morning line favorite in this afternoon’s San Felipe, a Grade II event at Santa Anita which has attracted just a short field of six. (more…)

Future Wager Pool 2 lacking value

When you consider the undefeated Barbaro won the 132nd Kentucky Derby at odds of 6-1, it doesn’t seem to make much sense to place a future wager on Nobiz Like Shobiz at odds of 8-1 a shade over 50 days out. Ketchikan playing catch-up

There were certainly some household names in Saturday’s Louisiana Derby.

Cowtown Cat still deep on Pletcher depth chart

Cowtown Cat sold for a cool $1.5 million at the Barrett’s 2-year-old in training sale in March 2006, so expectations run high. Yet after successfully stretching out for the first time on Saturday in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct, Cowtown Cat is still relatively deep on the Todd Pletcher list of Derby Hopefuls. (more…)
