Derby draw places several in trouble
A good post position certainly doesn’t guarantee a clean journey in the Kentucky Derby — but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Street Sense and Scat Daddy both fared very well at the Wednesday draw. Street Sense has notched both career graded stakes wins glued to the fence, and should find his way there early on from post 7.
Scat Daddy prefers to race outside of horses, as evidenced by the instructions Pletcher gave to Prado prior to the Florida Derby, so post 14 falls in line with that assumed strategy.
Yet the post position draw didn’t pan out quite so well for several others.
Steve Asmussen can’t be overjoyed that Curlin drew post 2. How an inexperienced horse (Curlin has just three lifetime starts to his credit) handles having 18 horses break outside of him may prove the most critical aspect of the opening quarter-mile. Additionally, Sedgefield, who himself possesses a fair amount of early speed, breaks from the rail, and the tactics he takes to free himself of that vice also figures to impact Curlin.
By the time Any Given Saturday’s name was called, only three posts remained, so he will break from post 18. Not ideal, although with his speed, Gomez should manage to find a comfortable spot by the first turn.
And fans of Great Hunter may have gone back to the drawing board after landing in the extreme outside post 20.
Bill Currin, despite having several inside posts available, opted for post 17 for the speedy Stormello, perhaps reinforcing the plan to change his tactics on Saturday.
