A shade over $371K has been wagered on the Kentucky Derby through Friday, and the current tote board holds several surprises.

Street Sense assuming the favorite’s role, however, is not one of them considering the buzz surrounding him this week, and 9-2 seems proper. Curlin has drifted up to 6-1, and is joined there by Scat Daddy.

Then it gets weird.

Next in line are Hard Spun and Tiago, both of whom are at 10-1, making them lower priced than either Nobiz Like Shobiz (12-1) or Circular Quay (14-1).

Storm in May was 30-1 when beaten 10 lengths by Curlin in the Arkansas Derby, and is currently 20-1 in the Kentucky Derby. And Imawildandcrazyguy, who was appropriately 50-1 in the morning-line after missing the board in both the Louisiana Derby and Florida Derby, has been bet down to 18-1. Must be Bill Kaplan brought some serious money to Louisville and got bets down Friday on his two entrants.

Dominican, on the heels of his Blue Grass score, is at 17-1 despite breaking from post 19. Meanwhile, Any Given Saturday, who breaks one stall inside at 18, is at 21-1.

The longest shot on the Derby board as of Friday evening is Fountain of Youth runner-up Stormello at 48-1, surprisingly a higher price than Sedgfield (46-1) and Bwana Bull (35-1).

A few deep long shots who have a reasonable chance to run well, yet have attracted very little support at the windows thus far, are Zanjero (34-1) and Liquidity (46-1). In fact, on ESPN2’s broadcast Friday afternoon, Jeannine Edwards asked owner J. Paul Reddam which of his starters he had a better vibe about — Liquidity or Great Hunter (26-1) — and he responded, “Liquidity.”
