There didn’t turn out to be many smart propositions in the Derby Future Wager, but hero Street Sense turned out to be one of them.

Regardless of which pool Street Sense appeared, players were rewarded with greater value than was available on May 5, when Street Sense won as the 9/2 favorite and returned $11.80.

In Pool 1, Street Sense was 10-1. That number dropped to 8-1 in Pool 2, and he closed at 6-1 in Pool 3.

Taking a closer look at the three Future Wager pools:

In Pool 1, 10 of the 23 Pool 1 interests raced in the Derby, although five of these went to the post at odds greater than the Future Book odds offered.

In Pool 2, 14 out of 23 raced in the Derby, and the best options all fared well. Besides Street Sense, Hard Spun was 20-1 in Pool 2, and went off at odds of 10-1. Curlin was 30-1 in mid-March, and 5-1 on May 5. And Imawildandcrazyguy, who finished fourth at odd of 28-1 to complete the $29K superfecta, was 91-1 in Pool 2.

From Pool 3, 16 of the 23 individual entries made it to the starting gate at Churchill Downs, and all offered practically the same price whether played in the Future Wager or at post time.
