Curlin showed an incredible amount of talent and heart in fighting back through the lane to nail Street Sense on the money. After all, the two hit the head of the stretch on even terms, yet Street Sense found himself more than a length in front in mid-stretch.

Part of the credit for this remarkable finish belongs to Curlin’s rider, Robbie Albarado.

After a brief stumble out of the gate, Albarado quickly and smartly guided Curlin out a few paths and alongside Street Sense, keeping that rival away from the fence. Curlin then went on about his business in the clear down the backside, and although Street Sense was able to sneak inside of him off the final turn, was able to reel in the Derby hero once he finally changed leads through the lane.

In the Derby, Street Sense’s victory was a product of a talented horse receiving a flawless ride from Calvin Borel.

In the Preakness, Curlin’s victory was a product of a talented horse receiving a flawless ride from Robbie Albarado.
