Certainly, the New York Racing Association was smiling at the eighth pole of the Preakness, believing a Triple Crown would be in the balance on June 9 at Belmont Park.

Of course, Curlin managed to dash those dreams with a remarkable rally, although all is not lost for NYRA and the final jewel of the Triple Crown.

Curlin is now considered “definite” for the race, and Hard Spun also appears likely. Derby hero Street Sense was originally ruled out, although now Carl Nafzger has said a firm decision will not be made for another week.

Short of a potential Triple Crown, having the Top 3 resurface would be the next best thing - and a very close second at that. The fact the Curlin nipped Street Sense now sets up the opportunity for a grudge match, and suddenly a rivalry is born.

Should one of these opt out of the Belmont, then the door would open for an appearance from Pletcher’s sensational filly Rags to Riches, who would make this race truly fascinating. Could you imagine if Pletcher breaks his 0-for-the classics streak with a filly in the Belmont?

Others that have to this point that have expressed an interest in running in the Belmont include Tiago, Imawildandcrazyguy and Slew’s Tizzy.
