Memorial Day recap from Belmont Park
On a gorgeous afternoon at beautiful Belmont Park, New York horseplayers were finally treated to some serious talent on the racetrack, a sure sign that the quality of racing has shifted into summer-gear.
In Monday’s third race, Commentator sure looked like his old self in making his first start since last September. The 6-year-old state-bred gelding has now raced just four times since his gutsy victory over Saint Liam in the 2005 Whitney at Saratoga, and may be targeting a return to that spot later this season.
The traditional highlight of the Memorial Day card in New York is the Met Mile, where Corinthian was a deserving victor.
In establishing a new career-high Beyer speed figure of 107, Corinthian stalked the pace from the onset, and managed to fend off favored Lawyer Ron through the lane. Corinthian washed out in the paddock on a day where temps reached the upper 80s, but behaved much better on the track then he has in the past.
Corinthian’s next start may come in the Suburban, where he will once again need to be on his best behavior if he is to pose a threat to Invasor.
No excuses for Lawyer Ron, who worked out a nice trip from the rail, and was alongside Corinthian turning for home. Not outfinishing Corinthian is one thing, but to be outrun by Political Force is another, and raises questions about his class.
