Pletcher youngsters deliver knockout punch
Todd Pletcher won a pair of 2-year-old races within minutes of each other on Friday, and both figure to surface in stakes races shortly.
At Monmouth Park, The Roundhouse debuted in most impressive fashion. The Michael Tabor owned son of Fusaichi Pegasus rated off the early pace, and put in an amazing rally down the center of the track late to win by 1 1/2 lengths, covering the five furlongs in 58.42.
The Roundhouse is a half-brother to Circular Quay, and shows works at Keeneland and then Belmont Park in advance of his career debut, meaning Pletcher has kept this talented guy close to him all season.
Fourteen minutes after The Roundhouse’s win came the career debut of Spanky Fischbein, a NY-bred son of Hook and Ladder, who withstood an early duel to win by a clear 3 1/4 lengths at Belmont Park over favored Unity, who debuted for Dutrow.
Beneath John Velazquez, Spanky Fischbein zipped through an opening quarter in 21.80 and a half in 45.45 before disposing of the well-backed Clement firster City Roar, and completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05 flat.
