Saratoga Picks: July 27
RACE 1
WIN — DRAGON FI rates the call to kick off the twilight program as he adds blinkers following a runner-up finish versus similar last out. Drilled a half-mile on July 21, and now gets the services of Prado, who has won with 8 of the last 14 mounts he has taken for Levine.
PLACE — Not much separates the top choice from SAMI’S DANCER, who finished just a neck behind the top choice in his latest. Failed to change leads through the lane in that effort, although a rider switch from Hill to Coa may aid the cause.
SHOW — TRUMAN’S GOLD has the zip to sprint away from these early, as he did in his latest effort where he won by four conclusive lengths. Trainer change from Asmussen to Jacqueline Oleanik points the wrong direction, however.
RACE 2
WIN — Hook and Ladder is off to a good start at stud, so accord the edge to TRIBOLET, who sold for $115K this May. Steady works at Oklahoma for this, and recent gate work is a good sign.
PLACE — BLUE FLIGHT is another with a lofty price tag ($105K), although Jimmy Bond has won with just one of his last 30 first-time starters. Nothing senational in the mornings, although attracting Gomez is a positive.
SHOW — YUKON GOLD RUSH shows a bullet five-furlong move in mid-July downstate that was the fastest off 33 at the distance that morning, good stuff for a juvenile. Watch the board.
RACE 3
WIN — FIRST WORD arrives here in arguably the best form of his career for Frankel and Edgar as he makes the fourth start of his form cycle. Ran well when placed on turf for his latest, and won his only prior attempt going seven panels on dirt.
PLACE — A repeat of his last gets NAR a return trip to the winner’s circle, but he ran extremely hard every step of the way in fighting back along the inside of Bound Notebook to earn a gutsy nose decision. Started 2006 out with a similar effort prior to regressing in his subsequent engagement.
SHOW — MASTER OF DISASTER makes his second start of the season here for Steve Klesaris, who is 37 percent with horses making their second start off an extended break. Yet to have much success versus this calibur, but should be sitting on a big effort if good enough.
RACE 4
WIN — Asmussen and Gomez are a potent combination, and an awful lot of money was paid for SEQUOIA QUEEN, so expectations are high. Daughter of Forestry has shown promise in the mornings, and got a feel for this main track with an easy work from the gate on Tuesday.
PLACE — SCARLET LOVE has improved with each trip to the track for Dollase, who runs his horses sparingly at this meet. Three starts and three second-place finishes thus far, although she holds an experience edge over several and does lure Johnny.
SHOW — ETRO has enjoyed a steady diet of strong works over Keeneland’s polytrack in advance of this for the French connection — Biancone and Leparoux. Dangerous to ignore.
RACE 5
WIN — EMIRATES TO DUBAI was an ultra-impressive maiden winner at Belmont going six furlongs, striding out pwerfully through the lane after bursting through a seam turning for home. Should enjoy a nice trip from the outside post.
PLACE — EXECUTIVE FLEET scratched from a start on dirt on Wednesday in favor of this for Linda Rice, who has a knack for clicking with turf sprinters. Seems fast enough on paper, although he remains unproven over this surface.
SHOW — SNOWSTALKER cuts back to a sprint after weakening in the latter stages of recent route tries. Graduated at first asking going six furlongs, and should produce a big late kick on the cutback. If run on Main Track: 1. Gold Trippi; 2. Emirates to Dubai; 3. Executive Fleet.
RACE 6
WIN — Class of the field is RAHY’S APPEAL, who has competed in six consecutive graded stakes affairs. Recent turf defeats came at the hands of Karen’s Caper and Citronnade. With just a single win over the last two years, may be seeking a confidence builder here.
PLACE — REWRITE came to the Spa as a hot commodity last year riding a three-race win streak, although she failed to progress from that point on as many had expected. Has looked like her old self in a pair of starts thus far this season, and should appreciate the return to a distance at which she is 2-for-2.
SHOW — SABELLINA may not be as good as she was a year ago, but at double-digit odds, will get a look for inclusion in the exotics. Will be closing late, although this flat mile distance may prove a bit short. If run on Main Track: 1. Rahy’s Appeal; 2. Sabellina; 3. Iron Goddess.
RACE 7
WIN — Quite a bit of speed lined up here, so SILK QUEEN may fall into a nice trip at a decent price. Has finished second in her last three starts, although defeats to Lady Joanne (2nd in the Mother Goose) and G City Gal (who was favored at odds of 3/5) are no shame.
PLACE — JERSEY BOND faces older for the first time, yet is another who seems ready to enjoy a stalking journey before tackling the tired front-runners turning for home. Just missed last out versus a good group at Churchill.
SHOW — How often have we seen Roddy Valente and Bruce Levine ship in runners from California that show immediate improvement? Lots, which is why MORE ANGELS will be included, especially at 10-1 with Velazquez aboard.
RACE 8
WIN — Good renewal of the Lake George, and with a short run to the first turn, expect GOOD MOOD to secure a gound-saving journey beneath Prado. In winning the Regret in her latest, she was bottled up at the top of the lane before finally tipping to the rail and unleashing an explosive kick.
PLACE — LADY ATTACK takes a major rise up the class ladder here, but just looked too good winning her last to ignore. Turned for home in that effort amongst a wall of horses, yet responded as soon as Borel asked her, and the Mutakkdim filly drew away emphatically.
SHOW — RUTHERIENNE would be benefitted by a solid pace as she closes from the tail of the field. Gomez gets along with her wonderfully, but may be forced to rally wide and lose valuable ground. If run on Main Track: 1. Dashes N Dots; 2. Awesome Ashley; 3. Red Birkin.
RACE 9
WIN — Hate the outside post, but BELLA ATTRICE is just hard to look past. Made a nice move in her latest off an eight-month vacation, and Levine runners score at a 35 percent clip when racing second off the break. If Coa can manage a trip, should get her picture taken.
PLACE — THE AG ran well in her career debut, finishing second to the late-running Nedjma. Was pounded to 4/5 in her next start, and was beaten over 18 lengths. Certainly capable of being a factor if able to replicate her debut performance.
SHOW — SILVER ELEGANCE tries turf for the first time after taking money in both previous starts on dirt for Bond. A MILLION DEMONS is winless from 10 tries for a low-percentage barn, but seems capable of grabbing a piece. If run on Main Track: 1. Silver Elegance; 2. Bella Attrice; 3. Maria’s Muse.
