Saratoga Picks: July 29
RACE 1
WIN – COOL THE ECONOMY was on off-the-pace maiden winner here last summer, and should receive a similar setup today. Took the overland route while finishing well for third in his latest and now drops.
PLACE – KIMKANRUN has been away since October, but Anthony Dutrow is 40 percent with horses off for over 6 months. Wow.
SHOW – TZIPI’s effort two starts back would be good enough to grab a share, and wouldn’t mind some moisture in the track.
RACE 2
WIN – With the favorite parked on the outside, accord the edge to RAP TALE, who might go off a square price for Pletcher. Was outrun early in her career debut, yet finished willingly while weaving between horses.
PLACE – HOPEHOPEHOPE has trained like clockwork every seven days since late May, outworking stablemate Slew’s Tiznow on several occasions.
SHOW – J Z WARRIOR raced greenly while wide in her debut, which was won in very fast time by According to Plan. Blinkers go on this daughter of Harlan’s Holiday, so added ground may help her.
RACE 3
WIN – Lots of speed lined up for this turf sprint, and despite the outside post, TUCKAHOE ROAD gets the call for Gomez, who has ridden the turf exceptionally well this meet. Gomez and Clement have already teamed for three wins at this meet.
PLACE – MS. SABBATICAL tries turf for the first time, but raced well on Keeneland’s polytrack to start the season.
SHOW – SOPHIE’S SALAD races in the colors of Food Network star Bobbie Flay, and didn’t race poorly when in-between horses every step in her latest.
If run on Main Track: 1. Ms. Sabbatical; 2. Tuckahoe Road; 3. Come Fly Away.
RACE 4
WIN – JOSEFINA’S PRIDE hasn’t been much of a threat in her last couple, although she takes a slight drop in class for this and it is a good sign she returns just 18 days since her last effort.
PLACE – EARLY HATCH ships in from Delaware Park off a convincing score versus cheaper last out. Obviously she faces better today, but can be a factor if Dominguez can manage to save ground early.
SHOW – MADAM MANGUY looks the mare to beat on the drop in class. Claimed in her last by Parisella, she runs back now for less than the price of the claim.
If run on Main Track: 1. Josefina’s Pride; 2. Morlana; 3. Madam Manguy.
RACE 5
WIN – EXONERATED broke like a shot in her debut, and found herself locked in an early duel with I Promise to the outside. That filly returned to narrowly miss in the Schuylerville, so this spot should prove softer.
PLACE – MINE OR WHO’S is a firster for Bill Mott off a decent worktab. Sire Mayakovksy set a track record in his debut at the Spa in 2001.
SHOW – STAID rallied past the top choice in her last, yet she laid back early and merely picked up the pieces for the place.
RACE 6
WIN – Very difficult turf contest, but finally settled on ADMIRAL BIRD, who ran very well here in a pair of starts last year. Was gelded over the winter, and was never really asked for much in his last while rallying for fourth.
PLACE – BANROCK was unable to muster a rally in an oddly run race most recently. Always looms in contention, but has seemed to settle into a groove earning minor awards.
SHOW – FRENCH TRANSITION gets back on turf. Not a bad one to include in Pick 3’s.
If run on Main Track: 1. French Transition; 2. Prince Raffie; 3. Ready Enough.
RACE 7
WIN – Not a whole lot to get excited about here. ZITTA draws the rail, but should return running following several quick works at Finger Lakes for new trainer Charlton Baker, who is a strong 5-for-18 here over the last five summers.
PLACE – TALENTED TREASURE was a clear second behind the top choice in race 8 in her last, and could earn another piece.
SHOW – BREEZING could win this with a repeat of her career debut, yet a repeat of her latest will see her beaten 23 lengths again. Prefer others.
RACE 8
WIN – The Best Bet of the day, LOTTIE ZIP could not have looked better winning her last, strolling home over five lengths in front with her ears pricked the entire way. Draws nicely outside and should make it two in a row.
PLACE – SECOND MARRIAGE has finished second in both prior starts at the Spa, and could rally late on the turf-to-dirt move and cut back in distance.
SHOW – TWISTAWAY will be rallying late and could complete a healthy trifecta.
RACE 9
WIN – One of the more anticipated races of the meet – but not for the wagering prospects. STREET SENSE is reportedly doing very well, and this should set him up well for the Travers.
PLACE – TIZ WONDERFUL is a serious racehorse, and Asmussen certainly shows his confidence by bringing the undefeated son of Tiznow back off a November layoff in this spot.
SHOW – SIGHTSEEING may improve with the opportunity to negotiate two turns, but can’t see him challenging the top pair.
RACE 10
WIN – Let David Jacobson sneak by on Opening Day – but not again. SHORT FUSE TARA looks well spotted having faced better of late. Has hit the board in 15 of 23 lifetime.
PLACE – FIGHTING SPEEDY loves this distance and has yet to finish off the board from four Saratoga starts, but Miceli is just 2 for his last 39 here.
SHOW – COLLEGE GIRL is a perfect 2-for-2 over this surface, but draws a difficult post. SWEET TIME will flash early speed and hang on for the super.
