Saratoga Picks: Aug 26
RACE 1
WIN – SEQUOIA CALLS was an impressive debut winner earlier this meet for Asmussen, and Gomez keeps the call for her second trip to the post. Should stalk from the outside.
PLACE – AWSUGAHNOW was unable to make up any ground through the lane of her latest, although she faced a solid group that day. Could be closing late.
SHOW – MEREDITH BEE encountered trouble on the backstretch, but still rallied nicely for second while well clear of third last out. Loses Garrett, but is a threat with a repeat of last.
RACE 2
WIN – MADEMOISELLEWHAKI was the choice here on July 26, and ran well enough to merit another chance. Was on hold until deep stretch when Julien was finally able to find a seam and ask for run.
PLACE – IMPRESSIONISM has finished second at short prices in each of her last pair. Will be saddled with an outside post if she gets in, but will likely be graduating soon.
SHOW – GOLDEN OASIS a first-time starter for Frankel off a steady work tab of four consecutive five-furlong moves into this. SCARLET LOVE and ATHENA OF TROY make up the Dollase entry. If run on Main Track: 1. Impressionism; 2. A. P. Test; 3. Dollase entry.
RACE 3
WIN – FIDELIO has been working briskly of late for Frankel, teaming with Fast Thought on Aug. 16 and working in company with Tight Grip most recently, who won earlier this meet.
PLACE – WAR PASS draws inside for Zito, who opts to take a more conservative approach after contemplating the Hopeful for his next start.
SHOW – CASSOULET won in very handy fashion most recently at Delaware Park, although the time was nothing sensational.
RACE 4
WIN – WHERE’S MY HALO exits the two-mile marathon, and actually ran close to 2 1/4 miles as he was wide every step of the way. Wheels right back with Dominguez, who has won with 6 of the last 11 mounts he has taken for Levine.
PLACE – KONG THE KING was scratched from a six furlong race on Travers Day to stretch out here. Should improve off a nice sprint effort in his last, and has worked well since.
SHOW – SACRIFICE BUNT finds a softer spot here for his second off the layoff, and the inside post should help. Was placed on the Triple Crown trail earlier this spring.
RACE 5
WIN – Juvenile filly dash, and Pletcher sends out an entry worth $625K. PHI BETA MOM has seemingly been ready to debut for quite some time now, while MISS GENERAL has picked up the pace in her training at Churchill of late.
PLACE – BUONA SERA raced erratically through the lane in her debut, and while Bush runners don’t win at a great percentage second-out, his barn is going very well now.
SHOW – BACKSEAT RHYTHM finished fourth in her debut, but runner-up that day Syriana’s Song has since come back with a stylish win.
RACE 6
WIN – SWEET BRUSH was a suspicious drop into a claimer for Pletcher when he won here on Aug. 4, yet won under minimal encouragement. Appears to be the lone speed here, and could repeat.
PLACE – FRIAR drops into a claimer for Al Stall, who has yet to have a horse finish out of the money this meet. At his best, he should cruise, but recent works have been awfully sluggish, and he may be overbet.
SHOW – READY ENOUGH exits several tough state-bred optional claimers, and although moving to open company, should give a good account. If run on Main Track: 1. Friar; 2. Sweet Brush; 3. Quick Comeback.
RACE 7
WIN – ZITTA showed good early zip last out when wearing substitute silks for her first start since November, and then packed it in turning for home. Blinkers and Garcia go on today.
PLACE – TOKEN BAY was under a strangle hold up the backside of her latest, yet still managed to finish well for third. Definite contender, although connections of Ubilo and Ponce are a little tough to endorse in the Win slot.
SHOW – INTRIGUE is certainly a possibility for Bush and Cornelio. Finds a soft spot to debut, although the tab is relatively short from downstate.
RACE 8
WIN – BURN ONE TURN ONE gets back on turf here, the surface he recorded his only career win. Produced a lifetime best speed figure in his latest off a 7-month vacation, and will be tough with improvement.
PLACE – BENEATH THE CROWN runs second off the layoff, and has delivered good efforts in such cases previously. Traffic trouble in his last likely cost him the score.
SHOW – Stay all the way outside with THUNDER MISSION, who should benefit from a return to sprinting. If run on Main Track: 1. Any Which Way; 2. Burn One Turn One; 3. Huge City.
RACE 9
WIN – Swinging for the fences here with NOTHING BUT FUN. Winner of the 2005 Victory Ride and runner-up in this race one year ago, her bloodwork was off recently, which accounts for her recent sub-par efforts. In with a big chance at a big price.
PLACE – MARYFIELD won her last trip to New York by taking the Distaff BC back in March, and has finished in the exacta in four of eight tries at this distance.
SHOW – INDIAN FLARE chased Burmilla home in the Honorable Miss last out, but may be better at this seven furlong trip. PUSSYCAT DOLL will crush these if able to return to her best, but fear those days may be behind her.
RACE 10
WIN – Top two contenders in this race hail from the barns of Saeed bin Suroor and Keith O’Brien, so have to go with JUROR, who will be making his North American debut.
PLACE – LOGIC WAY just missed to Thunderestimate last out, but likely didn’t expect to find a Godolphin runner on the return to an entry level allowance condition.
SHOW – IN THE SPOTLIGHT seemingly failed to handle soft turf last out and should improve at a big price, while SOLVENT is another bomb for the super. If run on Main Track: 1. Juror; 2. Back to Mandalay; 3. In the Spotlight; 4. Solvent.
