Saratoga Picks: Aug 31
RACE 1
WIN – WHAT’S YOUR POINT was last seen winning the opening race on Monday, and now wheels back on short rest first off the Contessa claim. Doubtful her six-length score that day took anything out of her as it appeared she barely broke out of a gallop.
PLACE – Should What’s Your Point scratch, slide SEVENTEEN LOVE above the other half of the Contessa entry. Both career wins have come with Garcia aboard, and like the way she showed quick acceleration to get through a hole along the inside in her latest.
SHOW – FIGHTING SPEEDY could be along late for a share having yet to finish off the board in five starts here.
RACE 2
WIN – Both halves of this Wesley Ward entry were entered and scratched from a similar spot on Aug. 16. CANNONBALL sheds the blinkers but keeps Gomez, while ONE LITTLE SECRET was a good second two back. Ward has won with six of the last 11 he has dropped into a maiden claiming condition.
PLACE – EL TAMBERITO has prepped for this at Philly Park, and Anthony Dutrow is very good with horses in this situation.
SHOW – FRIENDSLIKETHESE starts right next door for brother Richard Dutrow, although the worktab is less exciting.
RACE 3
WIN — ZAYNAB is a six-time beaten favorite, although her best races have come with blinkers, and they go back on today along with a rider switch. Long ways to go to make back all the money she has burned, but may start here.
PLACE — EGYPT LANE already has a turf sprint win at this meet, which should not be ignored. This is, however, a much tougher cast she faces today.
SHOW — SWEET RANSOM cuts back to a sprint after coming up a head short to Rasta Farian last out going one mile. If run on Main Track: 1. Sweet Ransom; 2. Beau Dare; 3. Ok to Pay.
RACE 4
WIN — Thought a good place to shop for a price, and may find it with RUNAWAY BANJO. Donk trainee cuts back to a sprint while dropping in for a tag. Like the recent 3-furlong breeze, which should instill a little speed.
PLACE — MIKE’S DREAM TEAM was squeezed a bit early on, but really showed no early speed in his debut, dropping quickly to the back. Did make a sustained run in the middle of the track, and connections must be respected.
SHOW — INTUITION MAGIC chased a hot pace in his last when facing much better, and may be able to carry his speed farther versus this level. For Ward stats on the drop to the maiden claiming ranks, see race 2 analysis.
RACE 5
WIN — Loved STASHED AWAY heading into her latest outing, but others got the trip while she was forced to alter course, and by the time she got rolling, it was too little, too late. Needs a trip.
PLACE — SURVIVED plummets to this $35K tag after finishing within four lengths of now-Grade 1 winner Rutherienne two starts ago. Likely to be bet heavily, making her a shaky proposition with Samyn in the irons.
SHOW — GILDED THREAD scored a convincing, albeit surprising at 17-1 odds, victory earlier this meet. That start was first-time Bush, and the way his barn is going, gives this one a good chance to repeat. If run on Main Track: 1. Gilded Thread; 2. Contessa entry; 3. Ritvo entry.
RACE 6
WIN — NAMASTE’S WISH hasn’t shown much in a pair of sprints, but now takes the blinkers back off as she heads to the turf for the first time. Have to think expectations were high with a hefty price tag, and may begin to show why.
PLACE — BOSTON CAT was bet to favortism for her career debut earlier this meet, and practically lost all chance when crushed at the start. Was 13 lengths out of it early, yet rallied to finish midpack while only beaten less than three lengths. Should handle the added distance.
SHOW — VALID HUMOR has flashed some good speed in the mornings, although Hough wins with just 3 percent of his first-time turfers. Should sit a good trip from an inside post. If run on Main Track: 1. Valid Humor; 2. Namaste’s Wish; 3. Boston Cat.
RACE 7
WIN — State-breds take to the grass, marking the first try on turf for TURNING LEAVES. Daughter of Mutakddim has run well in both starts on dirt, and should improve on the stretch-out. Prado wins with 38 percent of Levine runners.
PLACE — MISS BLARNEY STONE is parked on the far outside, but has finished in the mix in all three prior stateside starts, and will once agian be a factor if Ramon can manage a trip.
SHOW — DARING DREAMER has been steadily improving, but still thought she was flat through the final furlong of her latest when settling for fourth, albeit behind next-out winner Tishmeister. If run on Main Track: 1. Turning Leaves; 2. Storm Dixie; 3. Wynsome Wesley.
RACE 8
WIN — Girls take on boys in the feature, and have a realistic shot. SHERINE was awesome when placed on turf for her latest, exploding away turning for home with a solid kick. Fellow Zayat runner ZEE ZEE got the job done by a neck in her lone career try, although it was very well-measured by Kent, and could have been much more.
PLACE — PULLA FAST ONE raced four-wide on both turns, and was still able to grind out a victory last out for Weaver. That was a stark improvement from his debut, and continued development could propel him to an upset score.
SHOW — CARRY THE DAY has made just a single start on turf, but it was an easy victory going shorter in which he was geared down for the final yards. Gelded son of With Approval gets Garrett, who doesn’t ride often for Contessa. If run on Main Track: 1. Zayat entry; 2. Rebounded; 3. High Appeal.
RACE 9
WIN — BRAVE EMPEROR has found some talented runners in a pair of MSW contests, and will appreciate the class relief he gets here. Still eligible to show improvement in just his third career start.
PLACE — DECISIVE PLAY debuted on July 4 from the rail, and got quite an education. Now returns at the same condition with blinkers on and rider switch to Leparoux. Very appealing at double-digit odds.
SHOW — STAR STUDDED has finished fourth in three consecutive races, but is certainly not out of the question with leading rider Cornelio aboard. TU SANDY will be a price to complete the super. If run on Main Track: 1. Brave Emperor; 2. Violette entry; 3. Decisive Play.
