Saratoga Picks: Sept 2
RACE 1
WIN – Taking a shot against the favorite here as BODGIT’S JEWEL returns from a layoff for Bond. Lone try on turf was her lone career win, and recent works have been strong. Drill on July 23 was second-fastest behind Nobiz Like Shobiz, and most recent work was third-fastest to Georgetown and Vitruvius.
PLACE – AHVEE’S DESTINY scored in her latest sprinting here, and will be a major player once again for Rice, who is enjoying a solid meet.
SHOW – STAG DANCER already owns a pair of wins over this course. If run on Main Track: 1. Two Turn Halo; 2. Contessa entry; 3. Ahvee’s Destiny.
RACE 2
WIN – ROLLERS debuts for Tagg with a worktab that mirrors stablemate Big Truck, who rolled here on cruise control earlier in the meet.
PLACE – GOOD LAW was entered, but was a gate scratch in the race Big Truck won on Aug. 23. Shows a pair of strong works since for Dutrow and Prado.
SHOW – WISHFUL TOMCAT encountered traffic trouble turning for home, and was able to earn the place while showing courage along the fence behind odds-on winner Midnight Slammer.
RACE 3
WIN — CAT CHARMER has steadily improved in each start for Motion, who ambitiously placed him versus stakes company on New Year’s Day. Was closing late behind a slow pace in her last, and Gomez opts to stay, leaving Queens Full.
PLACE — QUEEN JOANNE broke through with an impressive maiden win last out for Zayat, a win flattered by the fact runner-up Impressionism returned to win.
SHOW — STILLED was run down late by Clifton Bay when last seen on July 19, although she has trained very steadily since. If run on Main Track: 1. Lost Etiquette; 2. Upscale Storm; 3. Cat Charmer.
RACE 4
WIN — Yuck! Restricted claimers make for a toss-up, so at a price, IT ENDS NOW gets the call to upset. Second off the break for a high percentage outfit, and should appreciate getting off the rail, where he has drawn in each of his last two.
PLACE — WILD QUAKE shows a bullet breeze on Aug. 27 and now gets Prado. Might be reason enough.
SHOW — ESTIMATOR dons blinkers for the first time while venturing into open company. Repeat of effort two back would be awfully tough to top.
RACE 5
WIN — QUIET ALICE took over turning for home, but was unable to ward of Crystal Minuet. Galloped-out very well in that effort, and gives every indication the added ground will be to her liking.
PLACE — FINAL REFRAIN was spun wide into the lane, and finished nicely for third, just behind the top pick. Gives the impression of one who might find ways to lose races.
SHOW — INDA checked in third in both prior turf starts, and loses Edgar to the top call. Certainly talented enough to be a factor. If run on Main Track: 1. Inda; 2. A. P. Test; 3. Motion entry.
RACE 6
WIN — HOPEHOPEHOPE shows the promising pattern of a ship in for a race, then head back to Polytrack at Keeneland. Was a tough trip second in her debut, and now draws a better post. Recent works match up well with stablemate Irish Smoke.
PLACE — LUCKY COPY acted up in the gate, and then chased along the outside in her debut after breaking last, eventually finishing third to Spinaway-bound Morakami. Interesting the blinkers go on at this early stage.
SHOW — MOON DE FRENCH and SUNDAY HOLIDAY comprise the Zayat/Mott entry, although half will scratch.
RACE 7
WIN — Impossible route for state-breds. SIDEWAYS GLANCE possesses the best early speed of these, and ships in for Chris Englehart, who has won with a pair of runners at this meet with Cornelio.
PLACE — LETHIMTHINKHESBOSS finished a clear second in his last, and now runs first off the claim on the slight rise in class for Galluscio. Mate STUD MUFFIN was a stylish winner here earlier at the meet.
SHOW — DRIZZLY seems probable to plod along late for a minor award, although his last win was the last team he paired with Johnny V.
RACE 8
WIN — STREET SASS was scratched from last weekend’s Victory Ride in favor of this spot, and should find plenty of pace to compliment her late kick. Although unplayable for the first half of this meet, Weaver is suddenly red-hot.
PLACE — JESSE’S JUSTICE figures to sit the garden trip tucked in behind the early leaders. Tipped out turning for home and streaked through a quick final furlong in her last. Lone off-the-board finish came with Raul aboard.
SHOW — MICHELE THE GREAT ran a monster race three back on May 31, bounding home clear by nearly four lengths. Has been unable to replicate that performance since. If run on Main Track: 1. Street Sass; 2. Laurentide Ice; 3. Becky’s Flute.
RACE 9
WIN — MYSTERIOUS PEINTRE was rank throughout when equipped with blinkers most recently, and should give a better account with them removed. Gomez rides the “other” Pletcher runner.
PLACE — DISTORTED REALITY has won all three ungraded tries on turf for Pletcher, and is clearly the more accomplished of the pair. Will also be a much smaller price.
SHOW — AMBASSADOR closed while widest in the Hall of Fame Stakes, and crossed the wire just a neck behind Distorted Reality. Gets reunited with Cornelio. If run on Main Track: 1. Mission Approved; 2. Giant Chieftan; 3. Distorted Reality.
RACE 10
WIN — MORE HAPPY took the Adirondack in her latest at odds of 3/2, yet will be closer to 3-1 in this spot. Bejarano learned quite a bit about this girl, and has worked her well since. Draws nicely outside, and doesn’t seem to be the type that needs the lead.
PLACE — IRISH SMOKE could not have looked better winning at first asking earlier this meet, and running fast in doing so. Spots the other experience, and must negotiate an extra quarter mile, but gives the impression of a very talented filly.
SHOW — PASSION took a ton of dirt when in behind horses every step in the Adirondack, and can certainly improve here. Like the fact she has stayed local since that outing.
RACE 11
WIN — CRUSADER’S CODE made a nice run through the stretch behind 6/5 Boxitup, finishing well clear of third. That division was the quicker of the two run that day by over one full second.
PLACE - Exiting that slower heat is KNOWNOWTHISISTRUE, who looked to be packing it in in deep stretch before re-rallying and earning third while continuing to gallop-out strongly.
SHOW — MONEY ORIENTED came up inexcusably flat for the final sixteenth here last out after Borel put her in great position. JETASTIK for the super. If run on Main Track: 1. Parachute Jump; 2. Tesher entry; 3. Money Oriented.
