Saratoga Picks: Sept 3
RACE 1
WIN – Claimers that have not won two races lifetime kick off the Labor Day card, and should be a welcome level of competition for YES IT’S THE TRUTH, who has faced some decent quality out of town this season.
PLACE – ROYAL ELECTRICIAN was scratched from a spot here on Aug. 24 in which he had drawn the rail. Gets outside this time and the services of Kent D. in his chase of Cornelio.
SHOW – RAW CAT showed his courage when battling back along the inside for the victory two starts back, and was never a factor breaking from post 12 last out. Capable of a piece.
RACE 2
WIN – JOVANNA was entered and scratched from the Jena Jena on Aug. 27, a race won in the easiest manner by her stablemate Expect the End. Maintenance breeze since for her debut.
PLACE – WINNING PUNCH was bet to favortism for her debut, settling for third while racing very greenly through the stretch. Kimmel wins with 26 percent second-time out.
SHOW – CITY OF LIGHTS begins her career for Anthony Dutrow. Bullet drill from the gate back in later July at Aqueduct hints at speed, and like the fact Rose gets the call to ride.
RACE 3
WIN — ALY’S TOUGH was steadied up the backside, entered the lane wide, and was never called upon beyond a hand-ride through the stretch to gain third. Galloped-out well in that effort 11 days ago.
PLACE — LEGAL TENDER hung well through the final stages after chasing Lhotse Quality throughout when last seen. Might be able to dictate the tempo on the front end here.
SHOW — KID DOC missed by a nose two back, and a repeat could be good enough to win this final turf spring of the meet. If run on Main Track: 1. Golden Caesar; 2. Legal Tender; 3. Strong Speed.
RACE 4
WIN — GREATER FOOL veered sharply outward at the break, yet still managed to get to the fence clearly in front, only getting run down late by My Golden Opinion. Might be better served with target early, which may come in the form of Elusive Value.
PLACE — TEMECULA CREEK dove to the fence when back on dirt last out, but was outgamed late by Silver Source. Broke his maiden here last summer.
SHOW — SHONE finished second to King’s Bishop runner-up First Defence on Memorial Day weekend, and made a nice run for third here most recently. ADVANCED SIGNS cuts back to a sprint.
RACE 5
WIN — GLOBALIZATION easily possesses the best early speed here, and with a short run to the first turn, should be able to open up daylight. Recent works on grass suggest the surface will suit him fine.
PLACE — WOTAN has logged a pair of works recently with Cosmic, who debuts for McGaughey earlier this meet with a promising third-place showing.
SHOW — INCALZANDO made a big move up the backside to reach contention, yet was shrugged off turning for home by impressive Mott-winner Prussian. If run on Main Track: 1. Globalization; 2. Hidden Glance; 3. Motor Patrol.
RACE 6
WIN — GROUND HERO made a dramatic rush to the leaders while four-wide off the turn, yet was out finished through the lane in settling for the place. Any move forward in his second off the break will aid the chances.
PLACE — MILITARY MAJOR checked in right behind the top pick most recently despite racing on the wrong lead for much of the stretch. Is another that will seemingly be aided by a strong pace.
SHOW — GRAND looms a risky proposition on the drop in class off a July 1 layoff. Certainly capable of whipping these on his best. If run on Main Track: 1. Monopoly Pricing; 2. Military Major; 3. Contessa entry.
RACE 7
WIN — May not be able to beat the favorite in here, although LADY DIGBY may stand the best chance. Convincing winner versus older last out at Colonial, and now gets Gomez, who has won with three of the last four Motion runners he has teamed with at the Spa.
PLACE — CLASSIC NEEL has suffered through narrow defeats at the hands of Audacious Chloe and Grade 1 winner Rutherienne of late, and obviously lands in a softer spot here.
SHOW — TEARS I CRY is on the improve for Bush, who has quietly enjoyed another strong meet. If run on Main Track: 1. Unspoken Word; 2. Star Dixie; 3. Ruban Bleu.
RACE 8
WIN — Both the short distance and a slow pace contributed to the sub-par performance by MAKDERAH last out in the Diana. Her late kick is electrifying, and should be able to leave these in her dust late.
PLACE — SAFARI QUEEN has been a consistent performer for Pletcher sans her latest Delaware Park outing. Winner of nine of 14 lifetime.
SHOW — HOSTESS has run some nice marathon grass races, although she has yet to prove herself successful versus the likes of these. Main Track: 1.
RACE 9
WIN — Most experience. Most accomplished. And the best post. All seems to have fallen into place for READY’S IMAGE, who has been targeting this race all season. Should sit just outside of Maimonides early in a race Pletcher won last year with Circular Quay.
PLACE — MAIMONIDES went for $4.6 million last fall, and looked very good winning his debut by 11 conclusive lengths. However, there weren’t any of the top choice’s caliber in that group despite Sam‘s Passion returning to win on Saturday, and he is likely to have the Pletcher trainee as a shadow up the backstretch.
SHOW — MAJESTIC WARRIOR get quite an education in his debut, angling off the rail to rally for the win. Draws inside once again, but will need to improve significantly.
RACE 10
WIN — Conclude the season with a contentious turf race, and with the possibility of deciding the jockey race in the balance, BIGGERBADDERBETTER could be the ticket for Desormeaux. Never had a chance to run in his last.
PLACE — WARN broke his maiden on Day 1 of this, and now returns on Day 36.
SHOW — STORM TREASURE has been away since April, and could not have waited any longer to run for Asmussen. PICK SIX to complete the super. If run on Main Track: 1. Warn; 2. Pick Six; 3. Kettle Hill.
