Post-Saratoga, Part 1
So after crashing on Labor Day night, my system is starting to return to normal following six weeks of non-stop, frantic action.
Belmont opens on on Friday, and while entries were drawn on Wednesday, let’s first take a few peeks back at the Spa season.
HORSE OF THE MEET — Street Sense will certainly garner support here having been the marquee name heading into the meet, and delivering in both the Jim Dandy and Travers, but the vote goes to LAWYER RON. His Whitney performance was sensational, and his Woodward win was equally impressive.
It could very well be that we get to later in this fall season and realize that he didn’t beat much in either, but the manner in which he won was impressive regardless.
Speaking of domination, how about ZAYAT STABLE. Whether it was with Mott or Baffert named as trainer, the turquoise silks with yellow dots were a tour d’ force all meet long. Wow.
As with all Saratoga meets, there were some moments we wish we could forget, but probably won’t. Massoud in the meet opener was certainly a tragic start. Bejarano and Prado getting injured were terrible, although we should be thankful that neither was worse than it turned out to be.
Yet the most devastating event of the meet for me was the loss of Indian Flare, who died following the running of the Ballerina. Docs says she likely fractured her pelvis at the start, yet still went out and whistled an opening half-mile in :44 and change. I liked her when she won a stakes at Belmont earlier this spring. Her loss was the lowest of very few low points at the meet.
