Any Given Saturday getting good at right time
All year long, we have been treated to brilliant performances from the 3-year-old division. Street Sense, Curlin, Rags to Riches. Hard Spun was impressive in the King’s Bishop. Even Nobiz Like Shobiz has enjoyed success on turf.
Yet you can now add Any Given Saturday to this mix as a major player in the Classic Division following his third consecutive win this past weekend.
The Pletcher trainee scored easy victories in both the Dwyer and Haskell, and although he dusted a weak bunch in the Brooklyn, it was a nice prep for the Breeders’ Cup five weeks out.
One other notable point from the Brooklyn was the lackluster performance of Sightseeing, who has been a supreme disappointment for McGaughey all year.
Other significant results from the weekend:
** Grasshopper was beaten in the Super Derby, suggesting the Travers may have taken a bit out of the tank.
** Jazzy took the Gallant Bloom at Belmont in her first career start on dirt, another example that Pussycat Doll is no longer the racehorse she once was.
** Good Night Shirt took the Lonesome Glory despite being “short,” which should set him up well the BC.
** Octave was beaten in the Cotillon at odds-on, and just may be headed in the wrong direction at the wrong time following a fantastic campaign.
