Huge day at Belmont Park
Breeders’ Cup Preview Day at Belmont Park, and aptly named. Four Grade 1 races on the 11-race card, and here is a look at some of the intriguing options:
Race 3 — The Miss Grillo
Spring Mambo (15-1) didn’t run badly at all when trying one mile on turf in her debut, and could be a big late threat with plausible improvement. Going to have to catch Sherine, who could get loose.
Race 5
Another price to open the Grand Slam as Kenta Kun (12-1) has offered respectable showings when sprinting on turf versus better, and may be able to spring the upset facing weaker on the stretch-out.
Race 6
Alwajeeha (10-1) debuts for McLaughlin, and while the two most recent works have been conservative, has flashed enough to merit consideration. Plus, those to have run aren’t very scary.
Race 7 — The Vosburgh (Grade 1)
Love Discreet Cat. Always have. Either Park Avenue Ball, E Z Warrior or First Defence could rally late for the place.
Race 8 — The Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (Grade 1)
Seems to be English Channel’s race to lose, although expect an improved effort from Mustanfar to enhance the exotics.
Race 9 — The Beldame (Grade 1)
Ginger Punch just simply looks better than these, although for some reason, I just don’t trust her. Therefore, this is the race to spread in the Pick 4, and include Miss Shop, Indian Vale and Balance.
Race 10 — The Jockey Club Gold Cup (Grade 1)
Two-horse race on paper, and both Lawyer Ron and Curlin should be used in multi-race tickets. Lawyer Ron may not run as well as he did at the Spa, and Curlin may not run as poorly as he did at Monmouth — but would still accord the narrow edge to Lawyer Ron.
