Saratoga Selections - Aug 1

RACE 1
WIN – Relatively cheap card where favorites could be difficult to beat, starting with opener as PANTHERA TIGRE stays at the same claiming level after winning her latest by a comfortable 2 ½ lengths, drawing away from the favorite in the process.
PLACE – CLASSIC LOVE dueled with eventual winner Myakka from an outside post in her only other try on grass. Was very competitive versus similar on dirt at Belmont, and will be the one to catch through the stretch.
SHOW – You know what you are going to get with ROYAL SPAULDING, who has hit the board in 11 of 18 career starts. Last out, it proved to be best by a nose. If run on Main Track: 1. Whisper Alley; 2. I’llthinkofsumthin; 3. Classic Love.

RACE 2
WIN – Valente/Levine combo especially dangerous with California imports, and such is the case with CASINO KAY (more…)

Saratoga Selections - July 31

RACE 1
WIN – BE CERTAIN arrives on a two-race win streak after taking a graded jump in his latest. Must pick up a few pounds off that effort, and this distance may be a tad short, but looks to be best for Voss/Whelan combo that took Wednesday’s ‘chase.
PLACE – BEE CHARMER unseated the rider early in his first attempt over the jumps, but returned to crush overmatched maidens by 20 lengths most recently. Faces winners for the first time.
SHOW – DR. BLOOMER ran fourth in this exact spot last year, so he does hold the advantage of having raced here before. Likely to be in front over the early fences.

RACE 2
WIN – Can’t overstate the importance of racing experience, and VALIANCY should improve significantly (more…)

Saratoga Selections - July 30

RACE 1
WIN – Here is the steeplechase race that was postponed from last Wednesday, and it gets redrawn with one less entrant. SEER was going to be the choice last week, so we’ll keep him on top as Xavier Aizpuru won half of the jump races here last summer.
PLACE – DYNASKI won last out in his second try over hurdles, and logged an easy breeze on July 26 given the extra week to prepare.
SHOW – The other Voss runner SLIP AWAY will be close to the pace early, but loses Aizpuru to the top choice. Dangerous if able to gallop along at will for too long.

RACE 2
WIN – Trainer Michael Trombetta won with a pair of impressive firsters last summer in Cave’s Valley and Now A Victor, and debuts GLORY GOLD here (more…)

Mambo in Seattle legitimate Travers threat

Flower Alley. Bernardini. Street Sense.

These three are not just the three most recent Travers Stakes winners, but also the last three Jim Dandy winners, further cementing it’s role as the traditional prep for the Mid-Summer Derby.

So it is no wonder all eyes were focused on the cast of seven 3-year-olds to load the gate in the Sunday feature.

Yet what was learned from Macho Again’s half-length victory over Pyro? (more…)

Saratoga Selections - July 28

RACE 1
WIN – Contessa sends out a pair that figures to compliment each other nicely TERGESTI will be the pace-setter and SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR will be closing late. May find themselves battling for top honors.
PLACE – BROOKHAVEN’S MONEY bulled his way through to score last out, running his current win streak to three. Training nicely since, although this will be his first attempt around two turns.
SHOW – BAYOU TIMBER ran a respectable fourth in the Albany here last summer, but hasn’t made a habit of visiting the winner’s circle of late.

RACE 2
WIN – Not a stellar group, and should BLAZING BUDDHA produce (more…)

Saratoga Selections - July 27

RACE 1
WIN – YELT was beaten as part of a favored entry last out to a horse that came back to run off the board here opening day, but should step forward second off the Anthony Dutrow claim. Owns the most career wins of anybody in this field.
PLACE – READY IN THE MORN has a tendency to settle for the place as he boasts six runner-up finishes to just a single victory. Logical to continue that trend.
SHOW – GIMMEAROUTINE was close to a very hot pace last out and paid the price through the lane. Jock switch today should find him closing late at a nice price.

RACE 2
WIN – Tagg wins with three of the five juveniles he debuted here last summer, so TALL POPPI gets the call sporting a very strong work tab at Monmouth.
PLACE – Trip handicappers are licking their chops to see CRIBNOTE return (more…)
