Saratoga Selections - July 28
RACE 1
WIN – Contessa sends out a pair that figures to compliment each other nicely TERGESTI will be the pace-setter and SUCCESSFUL AFFAIR will be closing late. May find themselves battling for top honors.
PLACE – BROOKHAVEN’S MONEY bulled his way through to score last out, running his current win streak to three. Training nicely since, although this will be his first attempt around two turns.
SHOW – BAYOU TIMBER ran a respectable fourth in the Albany here last summer, but hasn’t made a habit of visiting the winner’s circle of late.
RACE 2
WIN – Not a stellar group, and should BLAZING BUDDHA produce a similar effort as he did in his first two tries, will crush this group. Entrymate ITS GOODTOBEKING completes a very capable tandem.
PLACE – GOLDEN GUSKA has shown some talent in the mornings for Kimmel, including a bullet breeze over this surface on July 3. Wouldn’t ignore.
SHOW – ARRRRR ran his record to 0-for-12 when beaten as the favorite in his last. Low percentage connections don’t add any appeal, although he clearly figures in the exotics.
RACE 3
WIN – Very difficult race despite just five options. 7-furlong distance should suit GOLD TRIPPI nicely as he cuts back from a one-turn route downstate. A pace battle up front would certainly be to his liking.
PLACE – WANDERIN BOY is the class of the field, but has done his best running when able to dictate the tempo in route races. Makes just his second start of the season here, and from an outside post, should settle nicely up the backside.
SHOW – MR. UMPHREY may prove quicker that Wanderin Boy early, and if that rival opts to leave him alone, could be difficult to reel in for red-hot Dutrow/Prado combo.
RACE 4
WIN – BLITZEN TOO has run two fantastic races so far this season. She burst through a narrow opening along the fence to win her seasonal debut in late May, and then was nailed late by I Lost My Choo, who returned to win the Virginia Oaks. Deserving favorite.
PLACE – AMBIDAXTROUS finished right behind the top choice last out, and the potential of her turning the tables isn’t out of the question given a better post than that rival. Trips will be critical.
SHOW – STORMY RELATIONS possesses good tactical speed, and suspect she will assume a stalking position behind pace-setting Cagey Girl. If run on Main Track: 1. Motion entry; 2. Donk entry; 3. Blitzen Too.
RACE 5
WIN – Not crazy about the extreme outside post, but AUGUST RUSH has a sparkling worktab for Ward/Trujillo, who have already enjoyed considerable success at this meet. Needs to establish good position into the far turn.
PLACE – Pletcher has dominated the juvenile turf races here the last few years, and SALLY’S SONG looks to continue that trend. Logged a trio of strong turf works in June.
SHOW – REMEDY is a daughter of Lion Heart debuting for Asmussen, and while the turf pedigree may be a bit on the short side, has trained nicely over Keeneland’s polytrack. If run on Main Track: 1. August Rush; 2. Remedy; 3. Nan.
RACE 6
WIN – PEGASIAN was scratched when races were rained off the turf on Wednesday, but resurfaces here. Had a rough trip through the lane in his last, and should prove best with expected improvement in just his third career try.
PLACE – IRON GATE has hit the board in five of 12 starts, although yet to garner top honors. Recent form gives him a license to be a factor.
SHOW – FRA LIPPO has been away since a turf sprint here last summer, but has trained steadily in advance of this for Clement. Blinks go on, which may spark more speed from him than he showed previously. If run on Main Track: 1. Pegasian; 2. Iron Gate; 3. Second Mortgage.
RACE 7
WIN – FIONA FREUD has hit the board in her last five races, including narrow losses in the last three. Now drops in for a tag, which may be just what this girl needs to get over the hump.
PLACE – HORSESHOE BUOY showed improved speed in her last for Frankel before tiring. Replacing Velazquez with apprentice Morales will keep the price near double-digit odds – and thus making her quite playable.
SHOW – JE SUIS SHIEKH broke like a rocket in her last, but then weakened noticeably in her first start in 17 months. Will play “Come and catch me” as long as she can. If run on Main Track: 1. Je Suis Shiekh; 2. Kemly; 3. Quiet Mover.
RACE 8
WIN – Honest cast assembled here, and WINDY, who won here last summer, should be sitting on a big effort for Chad Brown. Found a tough spot to return this season in the graded First Flight.
PLACE – DRAMA LADY chased and then outgamed heavily favored Winning Point in her last at Belmont. Figures to race midpack today, but will need to get the jump on the top choice off the turn.
SHOW – INSIDE PASSAGE has won her last two going one turn, accentuated by an easy score two back. Major player in a deep field.
RACE 9
WIN – Solid renewal of the Amsterdam, and should Desert Key and Eaton’s Gift trade punches early, KODIAK COWBOY would be no surprise to mow them down through the lane, much the way he took the Saratoga Special at this distance last year.
PLACE – DESERT KEY is a must-use in multi-race plays, and looked very sharp winning on Belmont Stakes Day. Flattered when runner-up in that race Accredit came back to cruise earlier in the meet.
SHOW – FIDELIO will be overbet on the heels of a big Beyer fig, despite the fact the Mike Lee was run in faster time that day. Only loss on dirt came at the hands of War Pass here last summer.
RACE 10
WIN – IRISH BRIDE weakened through the late stages versus allowance company when setting the pace last out. Nice to see her now entered right back, and suspect she will sit and stalk in here.
PLACE – MILK RUN broke through most recently, winning a narrow photo. Figures suggest she is heading in the right direction, and isn’t out of the question to make it two in a row.
SHOW – ON LAKE has raced exclusively in Florida, and now arrives off an April break with Prado for Serpe. PRINCESS WESTLY didn’t have any pace to close into last out. If run on Main Track: 1. Irish Bride; 2. Dance Lesson; 3. Milk Run.
BEST BET
Pegasian (Race 6)
