Saratoga Selections - Aug 28
RACE 1
WIN – CAESAR BEWARE has proven an easy victor when at this level in the past, including his latest outing on July 4. Off since, he was a late scratch on Aug. 4, so proceed with caution.
PLACE – HURRICANE ANNIE rides a two-race win streak in from Suffolk Downs for this. Steps up the class ladder here, but trainer Linda Rice is catching fire of late.
SHOW – ROCKHURST swung wide and managed a third-place showing earlier in the meet. Picks up Albarado today, and with the right trip, has a chance.
RACE 2
WIN – First of four juvenile contests on the card, and although Rick Violette has been quiet at this meet, he has found success with these types over recent years. MONA FROM DELTONA shows a decent tab, and may surprise.
PLACE – BEST FOR LAST dueled for a half-mile before stopping in her debut, but has trained well since and drops in for a tag.
SHOW – Contessa entry occupies the outside two stalls, and either RUNNIN ON GUILT or JUST ANOTHER STORY appears to have enough speed to contend.
RACE 3
WIN – SEEKING ELDORADO has worked over the weeds three times in anticipation of this for Rice. Watch the board to see if this son of Hook and Ladder comes with high expectations.
PLACE – In he draws in, SARATOGA STEVE could be a handful after sitting chilly behind the leaders, and finishing well for third when trying turf for the first time last out.
SHOW – ROUTINE ADDENDUM has been training locally all meet, and HANGINGONTHEFUTURE could also impress for dangerous connections.
RACE 4
WIN – Zito saddles half of the field, and without strong conviction, will side with DEBBIE GOT EVEN. She draws nicely outside after racing along the rail in her last.
PLACE – SILVER KNOCKERS was outfinished after contesting the early pace in her latest, yet still held well over the top choice. Morning-line favorite will be tough if able to rekindle form she showed at Gulfstream.
SHOW – IRON BUTTERFLY will be the longest shot on the board in this short field, but has credentials to merit respect. Made a nice run to win two starts back, and keeps Leparoux.
RACE 5
WIN – Although lightly raced of late, MINISTER’S JOY lands in a relatively soft spot. Scored from off the pace two starts back with Castellano versus better.
PLACE – Godolphin and Samyn – an unusual pairing – teamed to win with Palace Episode last summer, and will try to follow suit with FORMAL DECREE. Faced solid group company in Europe.
SHOW – STEVE’S DOUBLE has tried turf just once, but finished third behind the exacta of Einstein and Thorn Song in that effort, and doesn’t find that class here.
RACE 6
WIN – Any number of ways to go in this bulky juvenile filly field, but Romans debuts an interesting pair in GLACKEN QUEEN and MEGALICIOUS. Each has the breeding to win first out, and both arrive with steady work tabs.
PLACE – Jimmy Jerkens and Johnny combined with Storm Play on Travers Day, and team with firster SO PROBABLE here. Think this girl may be a bit behind schedule compared to her stablemate, but recent works have been sharp.
SHOW – REMEDY displayed good early pace when debuted on soft turf before faltering late. Asmussen very good second-out, and very good turf-to-dirt.
RACE 7
WIN – Saw this race between a pair, and have to side with Linda Rice. DRESSED TO WIN was narrowly beaten when facing the boys three starts back, and although not one of Rice’s best turf sprinters in the barn, appears properly spotted.
PLACE – FLYING SAPPHO finished second here last summer versus better, and raced well behind Myakka in mid-June.
SHOW – SMARTGABRIELLE and SKIPPING CLASS form a dangerous duo if either draws in, while DOSE OF REALITY will also be a factor.
RACE 8
WIN – Smithwick winner HIGH ACTION is back looking for another stakes win at this meet. Loved the way he exploded over the last fence to win going away, and added ground plays to his favor.
PLACE – BE CERTAIN was scratched from a novice stake last week to await this. Very consistent jumper gets a big break in weights, but this represents a big step up, as well.
SHOW – SALFORD CITY will take this field as far he can, although distance could be a concern. Had no answer to the late charge from the top choice last out.
RACE 9
WIN – YOU CAN DREAM worked sensationally at Del Mar prior to shipping east to make her debut here for Baffert. Is this sounding familiar? Catch her if you can.
PLACE – JUSTWHISTLEDIXIE was bet to favoritism in a deep juvenile field earlier that came up sloppy. Owns benefit of race experience.
SHOW – SARA LOUISE was scratched from a similar spot on Aug. 24, presumably because she had drawn post 12. Primed to get career started, although this field looks loaded.
RACE 10
WIN – FIDDLERS PRINCESS closed with a rush to score in her latest, and now gets an additional sixteenth to uncork her rally. Runner-up in her latest returned to just miss a head-bob on Monday.
PLACE – AMANYARA may be stretching herself a bit at this distance, but tough to ignore anything Wesley Ward is sending out.
SHOW – FAIRYTALE STORY and SWAMP WILLOW are both capable of completing exotics as they return from layoffs.
