Saratoga Selections - Aug 31
RACE 1
WIN – Doubtful SHAAMI will ever earn back his $900K yearling tag, but has run much better in his last two. Won an early four-pronged duel two starts back to just get nipped at wire.
PLACE – YA THINK broke his maiden here last summer. Couldn’t keep up with a rapid pace in his latest, but did finish willingly for third.
SHOW – STOLEN GREETING possesses long shot potential having made a big late run to finish second when sprinting back in May. Could be dangerous on cut back here.
RACE 2
WIN – JUST A COINCIDENCE battled early with Hopeful-bound Munnings in his debut, and certainly worth noting Johnny opts here over a Pletcher firster.
PLACE – BIG FLIRT debuts for Wesley Ward, who won with Chief Talkeetna and Julio Garcia to start the weekend. Scratched from a similar spot on Saturday.
SHOW – IN SPEIGHT OF IT gets reunited with Maragh after slowly closing the gap in his latest. Blinkers go on today, which may sharpen the focus.
RACE 3
WIN – One of these times, RETRIBUTION is going to hang on. Nearly got to the wire after building a 15-length lead in his last, and actually galloped out past the winner.
PLACE – SKY DRAGON closes from out of the clouds, and will likely be in a different zip code than the top choice early. Has yet to finish worse than third in six tries at this distance.
SHOW – NORTH COUNTRY found himself in the tough position of leading the next flight of horses behind Retribution most recently. Capable of a piece.
RACE 4
WIN – Ritvo has been trying to get O SABINA started a few times, but she has drawn the AE list. Recent turf works instill some confidence, and at a nice price, to boot.
PLACE – Speaking of trying to get a race in, AMERICAS DREAMING has been scratched four times at this meet. Shows just a single work in the last six weeks, however.
SHOW – DEBBIE H should handle turf by excellent sire More Than Ready. GOT THAT MONEY is worth a look attracting Garcia.
RACE 5
WIN – WALKABOUT WINNER closed nicely in her only prior start behind some good ones, and has been working swiftly for her return.
PLACE – MY LOVELY LARK raced evenly when debuted in September, and has been away since. Bond has come close, but still winless at this meet.
SHOW – LOVE FOR A PRICE has raced well in each of her last couple, and indeed sports the best current form. Just have a hard time taking Keith O’Brien at a short price.
RACE 6
WIN – SWEET ARIETTE was working wonderfully prior to her debut, but failed to show any of that speed over a sloppy surface. Drawn more towards the outside here, perhaps a fast track will be more to her liking.
PLACE – ME LOVE has been firing bullets in Maryland for Dale Capuano, who doesn’t ship many up here. Well schooled from the gate.
SHOW – GOLD INDY has logged a pair of local works since coming north from Belmont in the middle of the meet. Worth including on multi-race tickets in wide-open, bulky field.
RACE 7
WIN – SECRET GYPSY possesses serious early speed, and while she will face pace pressure early, her second quarters are phenomenal and where she takes command. Given edge on drop from graded company.
PLACE – ACCORDING TO PLAN looked like a superstar in the making when she debuted to rave reviews last spring, but things haven’t gone according to plan since. Returns fresh, and has the ability.
SHOW – Thought highly of DULCET TONE earlier this meet, but wow was she dreadful in finishing eighth. Needs to prove she can rally from off the pace versus this speedy cast.
RACE 8
WIN – SEA CHANTER was pumped up in her seasonal return on Aug. 16, and a lack of early pace did little to help her settle. Reunited with stable’s main man, and should give a better showing with a target to run at.
PLACE – Gave serious consideration to BLITZEN TOO, who had produced a pair of eye-catching efforts before struggling over yielding turf most recently. First try versus open company.
SHOW – MOUSSE AU CHOCOLAT had everything go wrong when making her stateside debut in the Lake George. Now in the Pletcher barn, she is eligible to rebound, and will likely drift up from her 5/2 line price.
RACE 9
WIN – NISTLE’S CRUNCH has been right there in all five tries on turf, and truthfully had no business attempting the Haskell. Recent turf losses were to runners better than he finds here.
PLACE – READY’S ECHO will be attempting grass for the first time, but certainly has the breeding to handle it. Yet to finish off the board, including a third-place effort in the Belmont most recently.
SHOW – MARLANG ships down from Canada off a victory going longer. Always suspicious of these as the waters are deeper on this side of the border.
RACE 10
WIN – CASANOVA MOVE looked professional in winning her latest, and was flattered when runner-up came back to win on Friday. Seemingly able to sit in behind early speed, and added furlong should be to her benefit.
PLACE – MINE ALL MINE was entered but scratched from the Schuylerville, and instead broke her maiden the next day with style. Biggest concern is her inexperience beyond 5 ½ furlongs.
SHOW – JARDIN upset the Schuylerville back on Opening Day, and could get overlooked in the wagering here as well. Proven ability to rally from off the pace.
RACE 11
WIN – TALENTED PRINCESS needs a strong pace as he closes from way out of it, and just may get that exact setup. Walder has hit the board in 8 of his last 11 Spa starters.
PLACE – CROESUS has run evenly in a pair of recent start despite being well-backed. More than capable for dangerous connections.
SHOW – FACTUAL NUMBER returns at the price of the Hushion claim from his last. FANCY FOOTSTEPS will be forwardly placed for Wesley Ward.
