Saratoga Selections - Travers Day

RACE 1
WIN – Great sprint out of the chute to start the day, and ON BOARD AGAIN raced well when returned from an extended break behind King’s Bishop contender I’m So Lucky.
PLACE – AQUINO hung very well when hung 3-wide every step earlier this meet in a race which came up very fast.
SHOW – DIAMOND ISLE was close to a hot pace, and reluctantly yielded late in seasonal bow. Should run well on the cut back.

RACE 2
WIN – FLORENTINO was going to be the choice when entered on Aug. 9, but was forced to scratch after spiking a mild temperature. Has logged a solid breeze since for delayed unveiling.
PLACE – GONE ASTRAY showed better early speed in debut than was expected (more…)

Saratoga Selections - Aug 22

RACE 1
WIN – Talk about tough racing luck — GLOBALIZATION faced eventual Grade I winners Tale of Ekati, War Pass and Big Brown in his first three starts as a juvenile. In a field void of early speed, he could shake loose early.
PLACE – JUMPONTHEBANDWAGON has hit the board in 10 of 16 starts, although he has notched just a single win. Figures to complete logical exacta.
SHOW – OLDHAM could be a longshot to include as his only other try on dirt was a decent second-place finish. Will be picking up the pieces late.

RACE 2
WIN – Money figures to be spread all over the board here. Give the edge to DYNASLEW, who shows a pair (more…)

Saratoga Selections - Aug 20

RACE 1
WIN – NORMALIZE returned from over a year-long absence to rally and win going away, and looked to be in need of the race as she raced on her wrong lead through much of the lane.
PLACE – FLIBBERJIBIT must be respected as Kentucky-based trainer Michael Maker has enjoyed a wonderful meet, winning with 6 of 17 starters to date. May be able to shake loose early.
SHOW – Either half of the Contessa entry could prove capable as WILD LOGIC won her only prior Saratoga try, and MY LUCKEY PENNEY overcame a poor start to finish third in her latest.

RACE 2
WIN – After seeing McPeek runners Troy G. and Tar Beach win second-out last week, won’t let SNEAK PEEK sneak by with a decent debut under his belt. Gets Lasix today.
PLACE – HERR MOZART was entered on Aug. 15, but came out (more…)

Jones, Saez, Proud Spell ‘Cowboy Up’ in Alabama

It seems as though every year Saratoga produces a moment that leaves an indelible image upon all of those privileged enough to witness it firsthand.

This year, that race was the Alabama.

Despite Travers week just beginning, no race this season (more…)

Saratoga Selections - Aug 18

RACE 1
WIN – KNOW THE GAME did all the dirty work chasing Clay County throughout here 12 days ago, yet still managed to finish with good energy. Logical contender keeps services of leading rider Cornelio.
PLACE – Really gave serious thought to placing SENOR ENRICO in the top slot as he finally gets back to dirt, but it has been 53 weeks since his last win. Imagine the gray will be a late threat.
SHOW – As much as it pains me, Lukas is having a much better meet this season, which makes SWEET SUGAR entirely playable. Would not be shocked to see Chavez gun to the front.

RACE 2
WIN – TALL POPPI exits the Cribnote race from July 27, from which runner-up Remarkable Storm has since returned to win. (more…)

Saratoga Selections - Aug 17

RACE 1
WIN – MOR CHANCES really seems improved since joining the Linda Rice barn, and kicked home hard in the slop here Aug. 7 for his second win over this strip.
PLACE – PRINCE OF PEACE never left the rail in finishing third behind win machine Ferocious Fires in the Morrissey. Will be tough if able to step up in his second off the break.
SHOW – BUILDING NEW ERA won by five while on cruise control Opening Day, and then gave way to get beaten 13 lengths for new connections last out. Has been better around one turn, but don’t expect a return to Dutrow-form.

RACE 2
WIN – FOXY BAILEY broke like a shot in her last, and while proving no match for stakes-bound Mine All Mine, did well to hold the rest at bay through the lane.
PLACE – PERSISTENTLY made an eye-catching late run (more…)
